Journey of the Red Fridge

Serbia 2007 Director: Natasa Stankovic, Lucian Muntean Length: 52 mins. Production: Lunam Docs & The Global Fund For Children Journey of the Red Fridge

On narrow trails, with a breath-taking Himalayan landscape for a the backdrop, a young man is walking with a red Coca-Cola refrigerator on his back. His name is Hari Rai, and like 60,000 other Nepalese children, to cover the fees for his studies he is working as a bearer. The prize-winning documentary filmmakers Lucian and Natasa Muntean follow him on his journey through mountain passes shrouded in fog and through small villages. For food and someplace to sleep he performs tasks for the welcoming mountain inhabitants. Sometimes he stops to talk with people along the way.

It is through these encounters that we meet this charming young man, whose heart-rending life story is presented with disarming candour.

We are offered an unusual picture of the world today. Where all of modernity’s superfluous functions and material objects meet poverty and the conditions of underdevelopment. Hari and his colleagues work year-round, and are sometimes even forced to carry overweight tourists up and down the mountains. At the same time they are playful and beautiful young people bearing wide-eyed ideas about the future.

Through its suggestive imagery and hopeful tone Journey of the Red Fridge presents grave circumstances in an unprecedented manner.
