Black hearts (...the Earth is not round )

Czech Republic 2008 Directors: Břetislav Rychlík, Monika Rychlíková Length: 86 mins. Production: Plum Production, Czech Television (Center of Journalism and Documentary Production) Black Hearts

Black Hearts is the third part of a project of year-long documentary views on the human community. Here directors Bretislav Rychlík and Monika Rychlíková follow four Roma families living in four countries in Eastern Europe.

We meet the families in their daily lives. A poetess has high expectations for winning a grand award, a poor god-fearing family has to deal with a corrupt pastor, the in-laws of a gambling man are getting tired of providing for his debts. These stories and thoughts about life and death, cultural heritage and modernization, religiosity and family are intermingled through cross-cutting between the Roma communities of a settlement in Slovakia, a village in Hungary, a Polish industrial region, and a suburban community in the Czech Republic.

Black Hearts is a thoughtful and interesting depiction of one of Europe’s biggest minority groups.
